Yes, I Can! An American Journey is a 74,269 word memoir of Dr. James Post. The book, which has not yet been published, is written by Dr. James Post and Craig von Buseck.
Jim Post was only 14 years old when in the summer between 9th and 10th grade, on the third day of Boy Scout Camp he suffered a spinal injury while completing a shallow water dive.
Read More About the BookRushed to the hospital, Jim met his parents and Dr. Ambruso, a local neurosurgeon. After looking at the x-rays, Dr. Ambruso told Jim’s parents that he would likely be paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life. Although they held out hope of a miraculous recovery, it was not to be.
Dr. James Post is now a kidney specialist in New York City, a husband and a father.
From getting used to life in a wheel-chair, fighting for a college education and refusals from medical institutions to practice medicine due to his disability even though he had earned outstanding rankings in his class, Dr. Post wants to be clear that it was God and prayer that carried him through the difficult times.
Dr. Post’s personal story concludes with a challenge to readers to never stop pursuing their God-given dreams. “While my disability was a physical challenge, I know many people face the challenge of being told, ‘No, you can’t’ or grew up in a family where you were told you that you can’t achieve your goals. I hope after reading this book you can see the value that God placed in you when He created you. I hope that now when the naysayers start harping and those negative thoughts arise you will respond, ‘Yes, I can.’”
Dr. James Post is a full-time attending physician specializing in Nephrology and Chief of Internal Medicine at the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City.

A Note from Jim: Immediately after graduating medical school, the national and local media coverage prompted many offers for me to write a book. Agents and publishers called me with multiple offers. However, at the time I was narrowly focused on achieving my dream of becoming a physician and wanted to have nothing to do with all of the media attention.
Read More From the AuthorActually, I never wanted to draw attention to myself about being accepted or graduating from medical school. I considered it a necessary evil so that I could just accomplish my dream. I have always been very private about the details surrounding my injury and my personal life.
However, nearly 20 years after my graduation from medical school, I feel compelled to share my story with those who may benefit from my experience. It actually took me this long in order to digest and make sense out of the events of my life. Therefore, I’m writing this book not as a self-congratulatory memoir or to brag about my accomplishments. Instead, I offer it as a source of hope and motivation for anyone who may be dealing with a life-changing event. If even one person can recover from major life setback because of my story, I will have achieved my purpose.
My story is written, but has not yet been published. As I await acceptance from a publishing house, I invite suggestions about what should be included in this story.
